GH: What inspired you to start writing music?

Melyssa: Well, as a child, I wrote a lot of poetry. I would sometimes write parody lyrics to popular songs, kind of like Weird Al Yankovic!! It wasn't until I became an adult that I started putting lyrics to music and writing about deeper topics. I discovered quickly that it was a healthy outlet for me to deal with a lot of anxiety and emotions. In the last couple of years, I have started writing regularly. It isn't always an easy task to finish a song, so I have more unfinished songs than I know what to do with, but I started seeking out mentorship and co-writing opportunities and now it has become one of the most important aspects of my life.

GH: Can you tell us more about your experience performing live at gigs and what was the most memorable experience you had?

Melyssa: I have only been performing solo at gigs for the last year, as a singer-songwriter. Before this, I was part of a cover rock band and played guitar, other instruments, and provided back-up vocals. I don't know if I have a specific experience in mind, but the best feeling in the world is after a performance when people approach me and tell me how they connected with one of my songs. Often they want to share an experience, a feeling, or ask a question about something that I wrote or sang about. This connection, for me, is what makes it all worthwhile.

GH: How is your songwriting process set around?

Melyssa: I try to free-write every day. It doesn't always have to be a song, but sometimes something will jump out at me and I will use it as a precursor to a hook or song. Sometimes I just write letters to friends, my partner, or imaginary people. I do have a lot of unsent emails and letters! When I am in a season of songwriting, I try to put aside more time to go for walks, be away from my phone, and be in nature. These are usually times that I try to arrange co-writes as well.

GH: What motivates you to create music and bring awareness to different situations through your songs?

Melyssa: As I mentioned before, the connection with others that my song brings is what motivates me to keep writing and performing and sharing. The best for me is when I get to share music with an audience who is truly listening and they get to hear the context and the story behind a song. This is the most important part for me.

GH: Could you share some insights into your last project?

Melyssa: Currently, I have just released a song, "Mona's Song" which I wrote last year about a very positive friend and colleague who ended up in the hospital. It is a song of hope and encouragement. It is my first fully produced single with full instruments, so I am excited to share this with the world. I also have another single to release as a fully produced song "My Guarantee" which was previously released acoustically as part of my first EP and then I have a full album upcoming afterwards! Lots of releases, promotion, and shows to come!! In the meantime, I write :)
