We have the pleasure to have Sunny on Goathead !
GH: Welcome Sunny! Thanks for being here
Sunny: Hello! Thank You for having me!
GH: Can you tell us a bit about your journey as a musician? How did you get started, and what led you to where you are today?
Sunny: It all started when I was a little girl. My mother and father came into my bedroom every night to sing originals they had written together. There seemed to be arguments and stress filling our home regularly, but when they came together to create music, all of the world’s issues dissolved. Because of this core memory, I have always set out to connect people and uplift spirits through music.
I believe that music has such a powerful and healing property when it comes to both writing and performing. I believe music is what made me, it’s what shapes me, and it will take me from being who I was to who I am.
GH: What has been your most memorable performance to date, and why?
Sunny: One of my most memorable performances was actually very unexpected, but it left me feeling so filled with love and support. It happened back in December of 2022 when my guitar player told me that he would no longer be able to join me at any of the booked events for the entire month! After finding this out, I scrambled to find a replacement guitar player but had no luck confirming an accompanist. After arriving at the venue, I was immediately greeted with a bouquet of flowers, along with word of another musician coming to join. After playing for a while, I realized that I not only have the guitar but also the bass, ukulele, congas, and sax. This was such a special moment of community and coming together. I thought I would be playing all on my own, but the support of my musician friends and family really showed me I could do anything.
GH: How do you go about selecting the songs you perform? Do you have a particular process, or does it vary depending on the occasion?
Sunny: My Setlist changes from venue to venue. But I think the most important thing about performing is being able to enjoy, have fun, and play with your audience. Because if you're not stoked nobody else will be.
GH: Can you talk about a time when something unexpected happened during one of your performances, and how you dealt with it?
Sunny: There was a performance a couple years back where I was performing at the Lahaina Civic Center (one of the last stages Bob Marley performed on). The event was called "The Bob Bash." It was very important to me that I put on a good show because there were hundreds of people, but I also had a camera crew who was shooting for my music video.
So as it came time to get on stage and grab the mic, I realized that the mic cord would only reach half of the stage. So I did what I could and worked with what I got. The videos still came out great, and I learned a lot from the experience.
GH: What are some of your goals for the future of your music career? Are there any specific venues you would love to perform at, or artists you would love to collaborate with?
Sunny: I am still so young in my music career, but I have no doubt in my abilities. I intend on performing around the world and connecting people through the emotion and comfort of "you're not alone." I know that when I receive my first Grammy Award, I will have fulfilled and truly lived my life’s purpose. However, it’s not just one and done. Music is what keeps me going. It’s intertwined with every breath I take. So to really send it off the top for me, I would collaborate with some of my favorite artists like Miguel, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, and Doja Cat. There are many more artists I would love to work with, but for now, we’ll take it one step at a time and enjoy the ride.
GH: To this we say, it will happen pretty soon ! Thanks for being here, Sunny!
