Today we have the pleasure to have Jamie on Goathead !

GH: Jamie, Great to have you here! What inspired you to start writing music?

Jamie: Well, I grew up in house where music was constantly playing, it was probably more influential than the TV. Nobody else played an instrument but music was constantly there, the guitar captivated me from an early age and once I could play it just seemed like a natural progression to create my own music.

GH: Can you tell us more about your experience performing live at gigs and what was the most memorable experience you had?

Jamie: I've had so many great memories but possibly my favourite was opening for Ocean Colour Scene in my home town. They were proper indie heroes in the 90’s so it was a thrill to share the stage with them.

GH: What is your songwriting process?

Jamie: I’m honestly not sure I have a defined process, different songs come together in different ways and at different speeds. If I was to try and map it out it usually starts with a chord progression or riff that I like, and then I’ll start humming a melody which usually progresses to singing a random line and then somewhere along the line, there’ll be a line or a phrase that sort of signposts a a story and a lyrical direction to explore. At this point I really need to get something recorded even if just into my phone so I don’t forget it! Then we get to home demo stage and ultimately we end up in the studio.

GH: What motivates you to create music and bring awareness to different situations through your songs?

Jamie: I feel a need to tell stories, I’m hopelessly addicted to songwriting and I probably only finish half the songs I start, it’s a creative thing that just wont sleep. In terms of bringing awareness there’s a lot of my songs that are entirely fictional and just stories I want to tell. But then there’s another side to music and the arts in general and when I have something on my mind or something I want to say then it will end up in a song. It has to, music and the arts in general have been one of the driving forces in the human history, it helps us understand ourselves and helps us make sense of the world around us. It informs social change and demands accountability, the arts have a power that can’t be ignored and should be a force for continuing improvement and change.

GH: Could you share some insights into your next projects?

Jamie: Well first off I’m really proud and happy with my current single ‘A Little Grace’ it was a song that came together really quickly and organically and it has meant a lot that it was so well received. My next project is a song called Jennifer which will be getting released towards the end of August and I’m really excited about it. We’ve shot a video in a pub from my hometown in fact I grew up on an estate literally across the road from this pub and my brother plays drums in my band so it was really nice to both be there. For ‘Jennifer’ I wanted to write as if I was writing a mini book or something, its based on entirely fictional characters in a situation where I ended up not sure who I felt more empathy for. I’m really happy with it and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
